Want to learn fingerings for scales and arpeggios on the double bass?
“Scales for the Double Bass” includes fingerings for :
- One octave major and minor scales and arpeggios (including melodic and harmonic minor) using traditional “position” fingerings (Simandl)
- Two octave major and minor scales and arpeggios (including melodic and harmonic minor) using traditional “position” fingerings
- Two octave major scales and arpeggios using “pivot” fingerings (Rabbath)
- Three octave major and minor scales and arpeggios using “pivot” fingerings
I got the idea to create this book when several of my students needed scales for classwork and all-state auditions. I wanted to create a scale book that would meet their needs: logical, understandable fingerings moving from traditional position technique to pivot technique, covering all major and minor scales and arpeggios in one, two and three octaves, all in one book.
The reason the fingering technique changes from “positions” to “pivots” is that I believe traditional “position” technique is more helpful for a beginner bassist as it is logical and easy to understand. As a bassist improves and progresses, it is important to learn the “pivot” technique as it is a great tool that can give bassists a wider range of fingering options and can help with good intonation and executing fast passages.
All of the scales and arpeggios, fingerings and text have been written out on the Finale music writing program to create a clean, easy to read book. The book is 58 pages long. Below is a sample page.
It is my hope that with this book any double bassist can learn solid left-hand technique and a basic knowledge of all major and minor scales and arpeggios. I hope you enjoy this book and become a better double bassist by using it!
